The Dos and Donts After Cataract Surgery
Avoid Any Intense Exercise
The most important goal during recovery is to avoid elevating the pressure in your eye, which means you’ll need to avoid any intense or strenuous activity, such as exercise. By keeping your body calm and rested, you can give the incision a good amount of time to heal. Keep in mind that strenuous activity also includes bending over.
Wear Wrap Around Glasses
Your doctor will provide you with wraparound sunglasses once the procedure is complete. As unfashionable as they may appear, it’s important to wear them to protect and shield your eyes from light. After the surgery, they will be very sensitive to ambient light and may feel irritated. These glasses will ensure nothing gets in them or interrupts the recovery process. An eye shield will also be provided for you to wear while you’re sleeping. This is meant to prevent you from inadvertently touching your eyes. Make sure to wear this too.
Be Careful Around Water
Be careful when coming in contact with water. Try to avoid the water from going near your eyes, especially during the first week. If you have a pool that you’re eager to use, it’s best to consult with your doctor to know when it’s safe to use it.
Driving is Not Recommended
One of the most common questions we get is “how long until I can see after surgery?” The average timeframe is 1 to 3 days before you’ll notice an improvement with your vision, but for complete recovery, usually it takes 3 to 10 months. So, you’ll need to have someone pick you up and drop your home after the surgery. And always follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding a timeframe for when you can get behind the wheel.
Inform Your Doctor of Any Issues and Follow Their Instructions
In some cases, it is possible to experience problems after the cataract surgery. If you notice any deterioration of your vision, eye pain, spots or experience any nausea, don’t ignore it. Inform your doctor as soon as possible.
