Myopia is a standard refractive error that makes it difficult to see objects far away. It’s also known as nearsightedness because seeing things nearer is easier. Children may develop this condition for a multitude of reasons. The good news is, in most cases, it can be corrected.

Understanding Myopia

Myopia is a refractive error that develops when the eyeball grows longer than 25mm from the front to the back. Light improperly enters the eye, missing the retina, a layer of tissue sensitive to light at the back of the eye, which then causes objects at a distance to blur.

Signs of Myopia in Children

  • Squinting a lot to see, especially at long distances
  • Shares that they’re having a hard time seeing (sitting close to the TV or can’t see from the back of the class)
  • Frequently rubbing their eyes
  • Occasional headaches

Causes of Myopia in Children

Myopia commonly develops in children between 6 and 14 for various reasons. Primarily, it is genetic, so it is inherited from parents to their children.

It could also happen to kids who don’t practice looking at long distances. During childhood, it is important for children to train their eyes to look far away. This practice helps ensure their eyes strengthen with age and don’t get used to looking only at close distances.

How to Prevent Myopia in Children

If myopia is not a genetic condition in your family, there are several ways to ensure your child does not develop it. All of which are actually quite easy to do! The main idea is to encourage kids to partake in activities that involve looking at objects far away. Some suggestions include:

  • Going on a drive and playing I spy for objects outside the car
  • Watching a live sporting event from faraway seats
  • Taking a nature walk
  • Playing a sport

Correcting Myopia: It Starts with Your Optometrist

Frequent check-ups with your optometrist every one or two years can detect signs of myopia or other eye concerns in your child. And, if you’ve taken your child to the optometrist and they’ve already been diagnosed with myopia, don’t stress. There are many ways to correct myopia so your child can still see perfectly well, whether that’s through exercises or prescription glasses.
