Our eyes are under constant attack on a daily basis from all different kinds of “invisible enemies”, but when summer rolls around – and when the summer sun is highest in the sky – things can get really, really dangerous.
You’ll want to be sure that you are doing absolutely everything in your power to avoid any damage to your eyes and your eyesight as humanly possible, and a lot of that has to do with taking commonsense approaches to protecting your eyeballs from invisible and not-so-invisible threats.
To better help you do so, we’ve put together this quick collection of five different ways you were going to be to protect your eyes and your eyesight all summer long.

Protect your eyes from UV rays
The most important thing you can do to protect your eyes is to place a physical barrier between your eyes and penetrating UV rays, and you want to do so in a couple of different ways.
For starters, get your hands on a hat with a visor or a bill that will provide you with plenty of shade while the summer sun is up. You’ll also want to get your hands on fantastic sunglasses, and not just those cheap ones you can grab off the shelf of any department store, but sunglasses that will protect against UVA and UVB rays from the sun.
Get your hands on legitimate eye protection when tackling household projects
The summer season is when many people decide to take on DIY household projects, but you don’t want to end up in the emergency room with an eye injury because of it. Wear appropriate safety glasses to protect your eyes when undertaking household projects, construction projects, and landscaping projects this summer.
Be sure to protect your eyes when you are playing as well
All work and no play is going to make Jack a dull boy, would you want to be sure that you are protecting your eyeballs when you are playing sports as well. Wear sports sunshades whenever you are playing outside, and make sure that you protect your eyes when you choose to play action sports like paintball.
Avoid constant or consistent contact with dangerous chemicals
A lot of people are going to open their eyes when underwater in the pool, and a lot of them are going to come out with bloodshot eyes that are more than a little bit irritated. Minor exposure to pool chemicals will not cause major damage, but you would be wise to minimize exposure and wear swimming goggles when underwater.
Stay generally aware of threats to your eyes or eyesight
Finally, though it’s going to be impossible to avoid all accidents or incidents that could cause damage to your eyeballs or your eyesight, you’ll want to stay vigilant against obvious – and not-so-obvious – threats to your eyes.
Be on the lookout when kids are playing with toy guns, stay safe when playing yard games, avoid cutting off the rubber bands on lobster claws with your eyes exposed to a ricochet, and always stand as far away from a fireworks display about to go off as possible.
We wish you a fun, relaxing – and safe – summer!
