Did you know that the average screen time for Canadians is about 6.45 hours? The long hours we spend watching shows, playing video games, or working without taking breaks can cause our eyes to strain. This can include symptoms such as headaches, or dry eyes. If there are times when you find yourself facing these symptoms due to eye strain, here are five tips to help prevent it.

Get Regular Eye Exams
It is crucial to have regular eye checkups because your optometrist will be able to diagnose any issues and recommend solutions. During your check-up, inform your optometrist how often you use your computer and other devices. Additionally, remember to tell them how far away you keep your screen from your eyes on average, as they may have recommendations on how to reduce the risk of strain when using devices.
Assess Your Workspace
Whether you work from home or in the office, your working environment should be comfortable and reduce the stress on your eyes. Here are a few tips to consider:
- Have a chair that is ergonomic, supports your upper back, and forces you to sit up straight.
- Ensure your screen is 20 to 24 inches away from your eyes.
- The centre of your screen should be 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes to keep your head and neck in a comfortable position.
Take Regular Breaks
Give your eyes a rest from your screen by taking regular breaks, such as by meditating or stretching your body to help reduce muscle fatigue. Try following the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking away from your screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds and then back at an object 20 feet from you. Another eye exercise you can try is to stare at an object far away for 10 to 15 seconds before looking at something closer.
Try Computer Glasses
When your eyes are exposed to blue light for a long time, they can become tired. This can lead to accelerated eye strain. Wearing computer glasses will help minimize strain while using a screen by preventing excessive blue light from reaching your eyes.
Blink More Often
Even though we may not be aware of it, blinking helps to keep your eyes moist. When you stare at your screen for a long time, you tend to blink less, leaving your eyes exposed to irritation or dryness. This is caused by the evaporation of tears that coat your eyes. If you experience this, consult your eye doctor in finding a solution that minimizes the risk.
With our long working days and exposure to screens, it can be a challenge to minimize the time we spend on our digital devices. If you are looking for a way to safeguard your vision and eye health, then contact us here at Laurier Optical. Our optometrists are here to help!
